Carolyn McKay – CEO

BA(Hons) Modern Studies, PGDip in Social Work, Ad.Dip in Community Services Management.

Carolyn has worked as a social worker and as a manager of not-for-profit and government organisations working with children, families and people with a disability in England and Australia for over 20 years. Carolyn is passionate about supporting and empowering people with disabilities and their families within their local community. She feels privileged to lead NBI with its great team of staff and volunteers and close connections to the families we support and our community.


John Buttle – Chair

Member AICD

John has specialised in financial institutions for more than 30 years gaining a wealth of experience in audit, due diligence, strategy, planning and all aspects of risk management.

John previously served as a member of the boards of KPMG and Clean Up Australia and his keen interest in the environment and corporate social responsibility led him to establish a presence in the environment and sustainability services industry for KPMG, Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young.

He is presently Chairman of the Mary MacKillop Foundation.

John has enormous admiration for the work and dedication of the NBI team and trusts that his experience and expertise can be put to good use in the advancement of NBI.


Claire Cavanaugh – Secretary

BA, LLB, LLM, MBA, Dip Ed, Dip App Psych; Member AICD

Claire has significant corporate experience in financial and management roles; these include: General Manager – Daniel Bros and Co, CFO – Oracle Australia, CFO – Readers Digest Australia and NZ. Claire has been Practice Manager with Avalon Family Medical Practice since 2002. Claire has also held Board positions with Oracle and Readers Digest.

Claire is mother to Eddie, who is epileptic with autism and a global developmental delay. Claire joined the NBI Board in 2011.


Mark Woolven – Public Officer

MA Teaching – Special Education

Mark has 25 years experience working in the disability and not for profit sector with small stints in Local Government Community Service Management and the Cancer Sector. Currently the Operations Manager NSW / ACT – National Immigration Support Services for Life Without Barriers. Mark was previously on the NBI Board in 2007/08 and rejoined the NBI board in 2012.


George Johnston

MAppFin, BComm, (CPA), F Fin

George has held several senior positions within Private Banking over the last 20 years. His banking career extends over 30 years, having worked with both domestic and international financial institutions.

George is responsible for advising and guiding clients’ banking, investment, advisory and risk needs. He is currently a Director Private Wealth with a major Australian Financial Institution with expertise encompassing domestic and international capital markets, general banking, financial markets, investments and Family Offices.


John Dignam

B.Ec, MBA (Executive), ACA

John is a senior executive with extensive operational and management experience in the building and construction in Australia, NZ and the USA with Boral, OneSteel and Ingal Civil Products. He is a Chartered Accountant and a former partner of KPMG. A strategic thinker with solid analytical and operational management skills.

A Northern Beaches resident and father of three, John participates in the local community as Treasurer of Pittwater Tigers Junior AFL club as well as through coaching junior football. He admires the work of NBI greatly and looks forward to supporting its work. John joined the board in 2016.


Stephen Harmer 

B.Comm (Marketing), GAICD, IS Accredited Professional

Stephen is a senior executive manager with extensive leadership experience including over thirty years in general management, strategy development, consulting in change management, the sales and marketing of fast moving consumer goods and industrial, B2B and services marketing.

Stephen is currently involved in the development and execution of some of the most significant infrastructure projects in Australia with Lendlease Engineering. This involvement has also allowed Stephen to become more involved in the broader community through Co-Charing the All Abilities Executive Resourcing Group and has also ignited a passion for sustainability in Stephen.

Stephen has a great desire to contribute to local community based organisations and was very honoured to join the NBI board in 2016.
